There is something incredibly special about photographing a horse in their retirement years. The pressure of competition has lifted, the days are slower, and the bond between horse and owner feels deeper than ever. Ally and her gorgeous retired Dressage horse, Larry, are the perfect example of this.

We met at the yard in Cheshire where Larry is thoroughly enjoying his well-earned retirement. From the moment I arrived, it was clear just how much this horse means to Ally. There’s a quiet understanding between them – the kind that only comes from years of partnership, trust, and shared memories. And goodness… Larry really is a handsome boy.

Competition horses, especially those who have spent years in structured routines, can get bored very quickly during a portrait session. I always keep this in mind when working with them. My approach is to keep things moving, vary locations, and make the experience as relaxed and engaging as possible – for both horse and owner.

My favourite spot on the yard was the wooden stable block. The rich brown tones created the most beautiful backdrop against Larry’s dark coat, giving the portraits a timeless, elegant feel. Just as importantly, it proved to be a calm and familiar space for him, which allowed us to capture those soft, soulful moments that truly reflect who he is.

Of course, no session with Ally would be complete without her little dog, Delilah. She joined us for part of the shoot and absolutely stole the show in her own way. Once we’d finished the main portraits, Delilah had the time of her life racing around the paddock with her favourite toy – a perfect, joyful end to the session and a lovely reminder that these animals are such an integral part of the family.

Sessions like this are exactly why I do what I do. I travel all over the UK – and beyond – to photograph horses and their people in the places that mean the most to them. Whether it’s a competition yard, a private estate, or a quiet retirement home like Larry’s, every location adds another layer of meaning to the artwork we create together.

Ally commissioned these portraits to celebrate Larry not just as a former Dressage horse, but as a loved companion in this new chapter of his life.

It was an absolute privilege to capture their story, and one I know will be cherished for years to come.
