In October, I had the absolute pleasure of returning to Abi’s yard for a portrait session — a familiar place filled with familiar faces, and a few very exciting new ones too. We also captured some images for her sponsor, Toggi.
This time, Abi wanted to include a couple of her other horses, Misty and Pip, and of course we got some images of her new whippet puppy, Barney, too!
Autumn is, without a doubt, my favourite time of year to photograph. The colours are rich and timeless — warm golds, soft browns, and muted greens that create the most beautiful, painterly backdrops. The light is gentler, the air feels calmer, and everything slows down just enough to allow space for connection. It’s a season that lends itself perfectly to portraits that feel emotive, elegant, and full of depth.
Including Barney in the session felt especially meaningful. Puppies grow and change so quickly — one minute they’re tiny, floppy, and full of mischief, and the next they’re suddenly all legs and maturity. Having professional portraits from these early days becomes something incredibly special to look back on as they grow up alongside your horses, your children, and your life.
One of the things I love most about the way I work is that there’s no limit on who (or how many!) can be included in a portrait session. Horses, dogs, puppies, children, family — it’s all part of the experience. My sessions are designed to tell the full story, and I always encourage my clients to make the very most of that time together.
Abi’s session was a perfect example of that — a relaxed catch-up, a celebration of new beginnings, and a chance to capture this chapter of her life in a way that will last long after autumn has passed.
If you’ve been considering a portrait session, autumn truly is a magical time to do it — and one I’ll always have a soft spot for.
