There are plenty of ways to celebrate a milestone birthday.
A holiday, jewellery, a party... they're all wonderful memories. But some gifts become even more meaningful because they preserve something that can never be replaced.
Emily's 18th birthday portrait session with her much-loved pony, Rebel, was one of those gifts.
More than simply marking a special birthday, it became a celebration of a partnership that has shaped so much of her life, and a reminder that with our horses, we never truly know how much time we have left.
A Pony That Became Part Of The Family..
Rebel has been part of Emily's family for over twelve years.
Originally bought as her mum Becky's pony, through the years he'd become Emily's pony too.
During the COVID lockdowns, Emily started riding him. At first she admits she was a little nervous, but it didn't take long before she completely fell in love with him. Since then, they've built a partnership full of trust, laughter and countless memories.
When we chatted during the session, one thing Emily and Becky said really stayed with me.
They simply said, "We don't know how much time we've got left."
It's something none of us like to think about, but every horse owner understands. Our horses become woven into our daily lives, yet none of us are promised tomorrow.
Throughout the session, there was no pressure to create perfect poses or recreate competition photographs.
Instead, we focused on celebrating who Rebel is and everything he has meant to this family over the years.
The quiet moments.
The cuddles.
The occasional pull to eat the grass or trees, and I can confirm Rebel is an expert at giving kisses.
Those are the memories that often become the most precious.
While this session marked Emily's 18th birthday, it also celebrated every chapter that had come before it. The years Rebel has spent as part of the family. The confidence he's given Emily. The joy he's brought to them both.
Photographs like these become far more valuable with time because they capture something that can never be recreated.
One day, these portraits won't simply remind Emily of turning eighteen.
They'll remind her of Rebel.
The horse who became part of her story, who helped shape her confidence, and who filled so many ordinary days with extraordinary memories.
We often tell ourselves we'll book the portrait session next year, when life is less busy, when we've lost a bit of weight, when the horse is fitter, or when the weather is better.
But the truth is, the perfect time is always now.
If there's a horse who has changed your life, don't leave their story sitting on your to-do list. Celebrate them while they're still by your side, create artwork that honours everything they've given you, and preserve the memories you'll treasure for decades to come.
If you've been thinking about commissioning your own portrait session, perhaps this is the sign you've been waiting for. I'd be honoured to help tell your story.
