There’s something deeply personal about photographing a horse and rider where their story truly lives. Not in the white boards of an arena or under the pressure of competition, but at home—where routines are familiar, personalities shine, and the connection runs deepest.

When Laura & I came together to create a collection of portraits for her, that’s exactly what we set out to capture.

Laura’s world revolves around three very different, very special horses—each with their own story, energy, and presence.

Buzz—a talented Advanced Medium horse with a very different outlook on life. Busy, expressive, and just a little suspicious of the world, he kept us on our toes. But within that energy lies brilliance—and capturing that honesty is what makes portraits like these so powerful.

Prince, her striking 18hh homebred gelding, is everything you might imagine from a gentle giant. At just six years old and already working at Novice/Elementary level, he has a calm, laid-back nature that makes him a dream in front of the camera. The kind of horse who stands quietly, ears forward, completely present.

And finally, Lady, the youngest of the trio. A four-year-old homebred, sharing the same dam as Prince, she brought a softness and quiet curiosity to the session. Still learning, still growing—but already carrying that same depth of presence.

Their story is made even more special knowing they were bred by Laura herself, from a mare who—although unsound early in life—became the foundation of something truly meaningful.

Why Photograph at Home?
