When Rachel booked a portrait session for her beautiful Cocker Spaniels, Pepper and Molly, we had visions of a crisp winter sunrise over the Peak District. Golden light, frost-covered grass, and dramatic views stretching for miles.

As is often the case with British weather, nature had other plans.

Instead of a spectacular sunrise, we arrived at Surprise View to find thick fog, low cloud, and a steady drizzle. But while some might have been disappointed, Pepper and Molly couldn't have cared less. In fact, they had an absolute blast.

Their session became the perfect reminder of why winter can actually be one of the most magical times of year for a dog portrait experience.

While many people immediately think of summer for outdoor photography, winter often suits our dogs far better.

Cool temperatures mean they can run, play, and explore without overheating, making it much easier to capture natural expressions and genuine moments. Pepper certainly made the most of the conditions. At just three years old, she's full of energy, always on the go, and happiest when she's out charging through the countryside.

Meanwhile, Molly took everything at her own pace. Calm, gentle, and completely devoted to Rachel, she enjoyed wandering through the misty landscape with her usual quiet confidence.

The cooler weather meant both girls could simply enjoy being dogs, allowing me to capture the personalities that Rachel loves so much.

Many people imagine winter landscapes as dull and colourless, but the Peak District tells a very different story.

The rich earthy browns of the moorland, the deep greens of the moss-covered rocks, and the soft muted tones created by mist and fog provide an incredibly beautiful backdrop for dog portraits. Rather than competing with bright summer colours, the landscape complements your dog, allowing them to become the true focus of the artwork.

At Surprise View, the fog created a wonderfully atmospheric setting. The distant landscape disappeared into the mist, drawing attention to Pepper and Molly as they explored the winding paths.

Even without the sunrise we'd hoped for, the conditions gave us something equally special — timeless, emotive portraits filled with mood and character.

One thing Rachel had mentioned before the session was how much she would love a portrait of both girls together. Like many owners of multiple dogs, she worried they wouldn't stay still long enough to make it happen. As a photographer, I don't rely on Photoshop composites or digitally merging separate images together, so creating those special portraits means working with the dogs in real life.

To help set them up for success, we used a fallen log as a base for them to stand on. Giving dogs a smaller, defined space to stand is often a simple but incredibly effective way of encouraging them to stay in position. We also captured a few images with leads attached for safety and control, which were then carefully edited out afterwards. There are so many ways to create the portraits you dream of without having to fake the moment, and with a little patience, Pepper and Molly gave us some beautiful portraits together that were completely genuine.

One thing Rachel mentioned before her session was that she didn't particularly want to be the focus of the photographs. Like many dog owners, she wanted the attention to be on the girls.

Rather than creating traditional portraits, we focused on capturing the connection between them. Small moments, gentle interactions, and subtle details that tell their story.

For Molly especially, this felt incredibly meaningful. Three years ago, she arrived in Rachel's life as a foster dog after being found wandering the streets of Essex. Thought to have had multiple litters before being abandoned, she arrived nervous and unsure of the world around her.

On her very first night, Molly made her own decision. After being settled downstairs for bed, she jumped the stair gate, found Rachel, climbed onto the bed, and snuggled into her neck. From that moment, Rachel knew she wasn't going anywhere.

Today, Molly is a completely different dog — confident, happy, and deeply loved.

Capturing stories like Molly's is one of the reasons I adore what I do. These aren't just photographs of dogs; they're portraits of family members and the incredible journeys they've shared with the people who love them.
