Last May, I had the absolute pleasure of spending an afternoon with Sally, her stunning steel grey Irish Sports Horse Thunder, and their wonderful family in the idyllic Melton Mowbray countryside. This shoot wasn’t just about capturing beautiful portraits — it was about stepping into a lifetime of equestrian heritage and the loving bonds that make their home so special.

Sally first found me at Osberton International Horse Trials last year, and from the moment we connected, I knew this would be a truly memorable session. Their gorgeous stone-walled family home set the perfect backdrop for our shoot — from the charming front driveway draped with vibrant red roses, to the lush greenery surrounding the quaint school gate and their inviting front garden. Every corner of their property spoke of warmth, history, and an unbreakable connection to horses.

This is a family with horses in their blood — generations of experience and passion that show in every detail. Sally’s outfit choices were so lovely, perfectly complementing the immaculate turnout of Thunder and the other horses, Dexter and their homebred Pearl. You could see the pride and care in their presentation, reflecting years of dedication and expertise in showing horses.

We also had the joy of including Sally’s partner David, an ex-racehorse breeder, and their two lively Jack Russells, Jack and Sammy. To finish the day, we surprised David with some candid shots of the dogs chasing sticks in the garden — a moment he treasures deeply. As a Jack Russell owner myself, capturing these energetic, joyful moments is one of my absolute favorite things to photograph. There’s nothing quite like freezing that wild, playful spirit in an image.
