Sara, Belle, TT & Sol

In May, I joined Sara and her three horses – Belle, TT and Sol – for a luxury equine portrait session at the beautiful Eland Lodge Equestrian Centre in Derbyshire. The day was warm and bright, the kind of weather that makes you appreciate being outdoors with horses even more.

Belle was the star of the session, but we also took time to photograph TT and Sol, capturing a mix of combinations – all three horses together, and a few of Belle and TT for variety. The end result is a collection of portraits that tell the story of Sara’s life with her horses, both individually and as a herd.

One of the things I love most about these sessions is that they’re not rushed. We turned Sara’s lorry into a mini dressing room so she could easily change outfits to match different looks and settings. It made the whole process effortless and added some fun to the day.

After the last shot was taken, we sat together with a coffee and a sandwich, chatting about the horses and looking back on the day. These little moments are just as important as the photographs themselves – they’re part of the experience and the memories you take away.

Sara’s career keeps her busy most of the week, so time at the yard is precious. Her horses are her escape – a complete contrast to her busy working life. That’s why a portrait session like this matters. The artwork we create isn’t just decoration – it’s a daily reminder of the moments that mean the most. When you’re away from the yard, seeing those portraits at home can bring you right back to that feeling of being with your horses.

Eland Lodge provided an ideal backdrop for the shoot. We used the cross-country course for variety, starting with the panoramic views at the top of the hill, then moving down to the tree-covered paths for a more intimate feel. The light was perfect, bringing depth to the scenery without overpowering the subject.
