A Springtime Woodland Shoot with Ava & Her Gorgeous Dun Gelding, Bru.


One of my absolute favourite things about being a Nottinghamshire Equine Photographer is getting to watch the bond between horse and rider grow over the years. I recently had the pleasure of catching up with Ava and her stunning dun gelding, Bru, for their second shoot with me — and this time, we did something a little different.


For our first session, we stayed at their yard — a place Bru knows like the back of his hoof! But for this spring shoot, we decided to make the most of the season’s natural beauty and ventured to a local woodland just outside Nottinghamshire. The highlight? A breathtaking carpet of bluebells that transformed the woods into a dreamy, storybook backdrop.

It’s moments like this that remind me why I always encourage my clients to think beyond the yard. If your horse is happy to load and travel, exploring a new location can add a whole new dimension to your portraits. Bru took the woodland in his stride (as always!) and the result was a gallery of fresh, magical images that captured Ava and Bru’s connection in a completely new way.


I know it’s not always easy to find the perfect spot — but don’t worry, that’s my job! Over the years, I’ve scouted countless horse and dog-friendly locations across the Midlands. From ancient woodlands and open meadows to rolling hills and private estates, there’s a backdrop to suit every vision — especially if you’re not feeling inspired by your yard or simply fancy something a little different for your next equine portrait session.
