There are some birthdays that feel extra special—milestones that mark the end of one chapter and the start of another. Turning 21 is certainly one of those, and for Caitlin, her parents wanted to celebrate in a way that would stay with her for a lifetime. Instead of a fleeting gift, they chose something timeless: an equine portrait experience with the horses and dog who mean the world to her.

Meeting the Horses (and Mac!)

Caitlin’s shoot took place at their private yard in Nottinghamshire, on one of the hottest days of the summer. Despite the heat, it was a joy from start to finish. She wanted to include all three of her beloved horses, each with their own story.

Monkey, the main man of the yard, and retired eventing horse. Freckles, a striking 6-year-old dapple grey gelding, full of character. Archie, an 18-year-old black gelding, a former competition horse now enjoying a quieter life as a happy hacker.

And of course, we couldn’t forget Mac, Caitlin’s much-loved 8-year-old border collie. He’s been with her since he was a puppy and is her loyal shadow, always joining her on trips down to the horses.

A Personal Touch

One of the joys of photographing at a client’s own yard is the familiarity and comfort it brings. We used the paddock with its beautiful long grass to create soft, natural images, and then crossed the road to the horses’ summer turnout for a little variety.

Adding to the occasion, Caitlin brought along her graduation dress—a stunning outfit she wore for the first time during the shoot. It felt incredibly fitting, as her graduation is another milestone to be celebrated alongside her birthday. (And yes—we managed to keep it perfectly clean!)
