For many horse owners, competition results, championship qualifications and big achievements often become the milestones we remember. But some of the most meaningful parts of a horse's story happen quietly at home, in the places where they are loved every day.

Recently, I spent a wonderful morning with Kirstie, her horses and dogs at her mum's beautiful property, where the family breeds, produces and competes horses. Surrounded by a stunning garden, paddocks and familiar surroundings, it was the perfect setting to create portraits that celebrated not just what these horses have achieved, but who they are.

Kirstie's horses each have their own unique story. Toby, her striking black New Forest stallion, has enjoyed success at some of the country's biggest shows, including HOYS and the Royal International. Yet one of the most special parts of his story is that he almost didn't end up where he is today. Kirstie describes him as her "last chance saloon" horse after previous homes hadn't quite worked out for him. Watching them together, it was clear how much trust and partnership they have built.

We began the session with portraits of Kirstie and Toby together before letting him show off at liberty in the field. Seeing him move freely in his home environment created some breathtaking images - I mean he's just stunning, isn't he?!

We then moved on to Vinnie, a young homebred horse with a bright future ahead of him. Although he was rather suspicious of the chickens hiding in the corner of the garden, he soon settled and gave us plenty of character-filled moments to capture.

The session continued with Timmy and Winnie. These two hold a particularly special place in Kirstie's heart as they will never be sold and will always remain part of the family. Because of that, Kirstie wanted portraits of them together, celebrating not only their bond but their place within a family of horses that are all connected through generations of breeding. We used the property's entrance gates as a backdrop, creating timeless portraits that reflected both their relationship and the place they call home.

Timmy thought this was the best spot thanks to the cow parsley buffet that was close by!

One thing I always tell my clients is that your session should feel like you.

Kirstie chose to wear just one outfit throughout the shoot and we kept almost all of the portraits with the horses within the beautiful garden surrounding the house. There was no need for multiple wardrobe changes or moving between lots of locations. By focusing on one stunning setting, we were able to create a huge variety of images while keeping the experience relaxed and enjoyable for both horses and owner.

To finish the day, we brought in the dogs, Ralph and Rupert. Alongside some beautiful portraits with Kirstie, we captured plenty of personality-filled images and a few hilarious action shots that perfectly summed up the fun of sharing your life with dogs.

When horses are homebred, lifelong companions or simply part of your everyday life, their story is about so much more than rosettes and results. Portraits taken at home preserve the memories of where their story happened, the places they grew up, and the connections that make them so special. Those are often the memories that become most precious over time.
