It may have been a chilly day for June, but Nancie and Nellie’s portrait session with their beloved pony Pete was full of warmth. Pete, a 22-year-old grey gelding with the kindest nature, is everything you could wish for in a child’s pony – patient, gentle, and completely devoted to his girls. Watching the three of them together, it was clear how strong their bond is.
We explored some of the family’s favourite spots – the walkway to Pete’s paddock, his field, the stable, and finally a path beside the arena. Each location gave a different backdrop, allowing me to capture a variety of moments while the girls simply enjoyed being with their pony. Nothing was posed or forced; the portraits reflect the natural ease of children in a place they love.
Ellie and Adam joined us too, along with the family’s little dogs, Benji and Charlie. And while a session with children and animals always brings a touch of unpredictability – from bursts of laughter to quiet, thoughtful moments – that’s exactly what makes these portraits so special. The emotions are genuine, the interactions authentic, and the results timeless.
At the end of the shoot, Ellie and Adam told me how much fun the whole experience had been. They admitted they had expected to love only a handful of images, but instead they loved them all. That, for me, is the greatest compliment – knowing I’ve created artwork that truly represents a family as they are, in a way that will be treasured for years to come.
Photographing children in their happy place – whether that’s with a much-loved pony, beloved dogs, or simply outdoors where they feel free – is about more than just capturing a moment. It’s about preserving memories that become part of your family’s story.
