One of the things I love most about my work is that every portrait session begins long before I pick up my camera. It starts with a conversation — a design consultation where I get to learn about your family, your animals, and the life you’ve built together. The Banham family session was a perfect example of how these conversations shape everything that follows, turning a portrait experience into something deeply personal and completely unique.
From the very beginning, I asked questions about their everyday life rather than just what they wanted the photographs to look like. What fills your days? What do you want to remember in years to come? What objects or places feel like “home” to you? These conversations opened up a picture of life on the farm that was rich with meaning — tractors moving through the fields, cows grazing nearby, and treasured family pieces like Grandma’s old milking stool still quietly part of daily life.
Even small details, like milk churns placed by the back door filled with flowers, became part of the story we were going to tell. Nothing was included by chance; everything had meaning, and that’s what makes these sessions so special.
What I loved most about the Banham session was how naturally their animals and surroundings became part of the story. Rosie, Ginny’s 20-year-old piebald Gypsy Cob, has been part of her life since she was a child. She’s still happily hacking out once a week, still very much part of the rhythm of family life. Alongside her is Jack, the Border Terrier, always nearby, always involved, and completely at home in the middle of everything. These aren’t just pets or animals I’m photographing; they are part of the family’s identity and daily world, and that connection is what I aim to capture.
This is also where the design consultation really proves its value. It’s where I begin to understand not just who is in the family, but how they live together, and what really matters to them. It’s also where I quietly start planning my strategies for including everyone — especially the more reluctant participants. The tractors and Land Rover, for example, may have played a small role in what I like to call gentle persuasion for the boys to be involved. I am very used to working with hesitant males at this point, but I’ve learned a few ways to sweet-talk my way into getting them in front of the camera when it matters most.
Because of that, we were able to include meaningful elements throughout the session — the Land Rover, the tractor, the open fields with cows in the background, and even the family’s everyday clothing choices. Sometimes that meant wellies, boiler suits, and practical layers that reflect real farm life, and other times it meant dressing more formally for timeless family portraits. Both have value, and both tell different parts of the same story.
One of the most important reasons families choose to have portraits created is simply to preserve a moment in time. Life on a farm, or within any family, is constantly evolving. Children grow, animals age, and relationships shift in ways we often don’t notice until we look back. You never know when the dynamic you have today will change, which is why documenting it as it is right now becomes so meaningful in the years to come.
Family portraits aren’t just about creating beautiful images for today, they become part of your history. They are a way of holding onto the feeling of a season of life — the way everyone fits together, the animals who are part of your everyday rhythm, and the environment you call home. That’s why I always encourage families not to wait for the “perfect” moment, because often the most meaningful time to document your family is exactly as it is right now.
