I love it when clients come back for numerous shoots. It's just like catching up with old friends. Especially when they have the same pony from the time before. It's crazy how much Violette has grown up since last time I saw her, Tommy was still just as handsome, too!


This portrait session was a gift from Violette's mum, Annie, this time for her 18th birthday.


We did the shoot on their new livery yard in Anslow, Derbyshire. The yard is based on a farm, which had loads of lovely locations to choose from, from corrugated iron barn walls, to gorgeous hill views and lakes with beautiful old oak trees holding onto their bright orange leaves as it was autumn.

We started off down at the lake side, shooting across the lake as Violette really wanted this to be included. They're totally spoiled at this yard for miles of off road hacking around the fields, so we made good use of them for this portrait session. Tommy was such a good boy, happy going wherever and keeping his ears pricked the whole time.


Around the other side was a gorgeous old oak tree at the edge of the field, so we finished here before a outfit change and making use of the barns and buildings closer to the yard.


The last section of the shoot we used the views and open space at the top of the hill - there's just something about the rolling Derbyshire hills that feels so homely to me.


As you can see we got a lovely variety of images for Violette, and we managed to coax her mum into a couple of them, too!

Lots of polos and pats at the end for Tommy as he was such a good boy. He even got to go out into the sand paddock and have a nice roll at the end which he really enjoyed.


Autumn is the perfect time for an equine portrait session – the light is gorgeous, the colours are stunning, and there’s a crispness in the air that makes everything feel a bit more special. Horses look amazing against the golden leaves, and the softer sunshine means no harsh shadows, just warm, flattering light. Plus, it’s a great excuse to wrap up in cosy layers and capture some beautiful moments before winter rolls in.
