Jess, Uwie & Zeus

It’s always such an honour when a family invites me back to capture another chapter of their lives—and the Hughes family are no exception. This was my second session with them, and this time, Jess took centre stage with her two stunning bay event horses, Uwie and Zeus. Being trusted again by clients is the highest compliment I could receive, and it never fails to make me feel grateful and inspired.

This session was a beautiful contrast to our first. Instead of spring, we embraced the rich, warm tones of autumn. We headed to Legacy Equine Rehab in Church Broughton, Derbyshire, where Uwie has been spending the past few months recovering from an injury.

One of my favourite things about returning to a family after a few years is seeing how much everyone has grown and changed. Having fresh portraits of the kids alongside their horses and dog really tells a story of family life evolving over time.

"We've had two photoshoots with Imogen in the last couple of years and both have been a fantastic experience. No detail is overlooked, and she goes out of her way to make sure she understands exactly what you want.

Our second shoot had to be postponed due to one of our horses sustaining an injury, Imogen was so understanding and helpful, rearranging the shoot date and accommodating a change of location to ensure that he could still be in the photos.



One of my biggest concerns was getting two teenagers to feel comfortable in front of the camera, not to mention keeping horses and a dog all under control, however Imogen put everyone at ease straight away, the kids had a ball and all the animals thoroughly enjoyed being models for the afternoon! It is no mean feat to get two horses, a dog and two teenagers to look at the camera and smile but somehow she managed it!

Both viewings were emotional, the photos came out better than we ever thought possible. The viewing itself was a really lovely, relaxed experience, over a cuppa and biscuit. Imogen let us take as much time as we needed to choose our favourites and decide exactly what we wanted – we ended up with all our photographs as well as two beautiful frames, as we couldn't possibly choose, I don't think I'll ever tire at looking at them.

I’m thrilled to share that one of the images from this session was recently entered into the Equine & Country Photographer Of The Year Awards, and came back with a Merit in the Children & Ponies category—a wonderful recognition of this special family moment.

We also had some absolutely hilarious moments thanks to their Labrador, Skye.

I last saw her as a tiny puppy, and now she’s full of energy and personality and loves playing fetch.

Will was keen to get some shots of her running around, and it made for some fantastic, playful images to finish the session with a smile.

Every portrait session is an opportunity to create something fresh and unique, and this one was no exception. Working with Jess, Uwie, Zeus, and the rest of the family reminded me why I love what I do: capturing real connections, marking milestones, and creating timeless images that families can treasure forever.
